Position Overview: Police Officer I, II, or III

JCCPD is hiring for multiple levels of Police Officer positions based on experience and qualifications:

  • Police Officer I (Entry-Level): $57,750 per year
  • Police Officer II: $59,850 per year
  • Police Officer III: Up to $66,000 per year

Education Incentives:

  • $1,500 added to salary for an Associate Degree or 60 earned credit hours.
  • $3,000 added to salary for a Bachelor’s Degree or higher.

Signing Bonus: $5,000 (half paid upon hire, half paid after field training).

Work Schedule: Patrol officers work 12-hour shifts on a 14-day cycle:

  • 2 days on, 2 days off, 3 days on, 2 days off, 2 days on, 3 days off (every other weekend off).
  • Shifts rotate every 10 weeks between day and night.

Primary Responsibilities

As a James City County Police Officer, you will:

  • Patrol assigned areas: Enforce laws, prevent crime, and respond to emergencies.
  • Conduct investigations: Interview witnesses, collect evidence, and prepare case files.
  • Perform traffic enforcement: Investigate crashes and issue citations.
  • Apprehend suspects: Execute arrests, conduct searches, and transport prisoners.
  • Engage with the community: Build positive relationships through community policing initiatives.
  • Testify in court: Provide accurate and professional testimony.

Advanced Officers (Police Officer III and IV) may also supervise junior officers, conduct specialized investigations, and lead field training.

JCCPD offers a structured Career Ladder Advancement Program, allowing officers to advance through four levels:

  2. Police Officer II: $59,850 - $90,806
  3. Police Officer III (Senior Officer): $62,246 - $97,370
  4. Police Officer IV (Master Officer): $64,736 - $104,429

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for a position with JCCPD, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Age: At least 21 years old by academy graduation.
  • Citizenship: U.S. Citizen.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED (college preferred).
  • Driver’s License: Valid Virginia driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Criminal Record: No felony convictions, domestic violence offenses, or serious misdemeanors.
  • Drug-Free: No illegal drug use within the past 3 years.

Certified Officers:

  • Virginia-Certified Officers start at a higher salary and bypass the academy but must complete field training.
  • Out-of-State Certified Officers must have 3 years of continuous experience and qualify for Virginia's Option 5 Lateral Program, requiring a 6-week academy and field training.

Hiring Process

The hiring process includes the following steps:

  1. Application Review: Submit a complete application online.
  2. Panel Interview: Interview with department representatives.
  3. Background Investigation: Comprehensive review of personal history.
  4. Fitness Assessment: Physical readiness evaluation, including:
    • Lifting a 50 lb. weight and carrying it 25 feet.
    • Ascending and descending 3 flights of stairs within specified times.
    • Running and walking on flat and rough terrain.
    • Prone to standing position unassisted.
    • Firearm slide manipulation and trigger pull test.
  5. Polygraph Examination: Lie detector test.
  6. Psychological Assessment: Formal evaluation with one-on-one interview.
  7. Medical Exam: Physical exam with drug screening.

Salary and Benefits

  • Virginia-Certified Officers: No academy required; must complete field training.
  • Out-of-State Certified Officers: Must have 3 years of continuous experience and complete a 6-week lateral academy under Virginia's Option 5 Out-of-State Program, followed by field training.
