Job Summary
The Bedford County Sheriff's Office is offering an opportunity for individuals seeking a career in law enforcement. Selected candidates will be employed as Deputy Sheriff - Field Division, responsible for enforcing the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the ordinances of Bedford County.
This is a full-time, paid position with a competitive salary, benefits, and overtime provisions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Primary Responsibilities
- Enforce the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and Bedford County ordinances.
- Conduct patrols, respond to emergency and non-emergency calls, and perform preliminary investigations.
- Engage with the community to promote public safety and crime prevention.
- Participate in specialized training, departmental tasks, and career development programs.

Qualifications
To participate in the Deputy Sheriff recruitment process, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen or have applied for citizenship.
- Education: High school diploma, General Education Degree (GED), or equivalent.
- Driver’s License: Must possess a valid Virginia operator's license at the time of employment.
- Age: Must be at least 21 years old by the date of hire or completion of the training academy.
- Criminal History: No felony convictions; misdemeanor convictions will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
- Drug Use: No felony drug charges or multiple uses/experimentation with heroin, cocaine, LSD, methamphetamines, or similar substances.
- Tobacco Use: Must agree to abstain from tobacco products both on and off duty, in compliance with Virginia Heart and Lung Laws.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Virginia law enforcement certification or current attendance at a pre-employment certification program.
- Military or prior law enforcement experience.
Selection Process
The BCSO hiring process typically takes 6 to 12 weeks and includes the following stages:
- Application Screening: Review of submitted applications for minimum qualifications.
- Written Examination: Testing for basic knowledge and skills.
- Panel Interview: Interview with BCSO representatives.
- Background Investigation: Thorough review, including prior employment and criminal history.
- Polygraph Examination: Conducted in person.
- Psychological Evaluation: Formal assessment by a licensed psychologist.
- Medical Examination: Comprehensive physical evaluation, including a drug screening.
Offer of Employment
Upon successful completion of all phases, candidates may receive a conditional offer of employment. If hired as a Deputy Sheriff, candidates will attend a state-certified police academy, with the duration dependent on prior certification status.
Important: Recruits will participate in daily, rigorous physical training. If you are not currently in satisfactory physical condition, it is recommended to start a fitness program after consulting a medical professional.
